Microsoft has announced that support for SharePoint 2010 workflows in Microsoft 365 will end this year - which means Microsoft will not release any new patches and/or security updates.
From August 1st 2020, SharePoint 2010 workflows will be turned off for newly created tenants, and from November 1st 2020, Microsoft will begin to remove the ability to run or create SharePoint 2010 workflows from existing tenants. New patches and security updates for SharePoint online will no longer be released.
While SharePoint 2013 workflows are still supported, Microsoft is also deprecating them. This means they won't release any further updates with the exception of security updates.
Migrating these to Power Platform is not as urgent as 2010 workflows, but this might be the right opportunity to modernise and upgrade all your legacy workflow solutions at the same time.
Microsoft suggest that organisations replace the existing SharePoint 2010 workflows with Flows built in Power Automate. The existing legacy workflows will have to be migrated to Power Automate, and the solutions updated to reflect these changes.
To help organisations do this, Microsoft is providing a simple tool to identify those areas of your SharePoint online system that are using SP 2010 workflows; but the tool does not take licensing into consideration, or the effort required.
All Microsoft 365 licences include use of Power Platform for extending and customising Microsoft 365 applications, including Power Apps and Power Automate. Users can also buy additional premium features for Power Automate, on top of Microsoft 365 licences.
This sudden announcement has given enterprises and IT professionals little time to react, and successfully navigating the changes might need some external input.
