E7 Done Properly: How Core Helps You Unlock Value and Control Spend

E7 Done Properly: How Core Helps You Unlock Value and Control Spend
8:39

When Microsoft unveiled E7, the messaging was ambitious. AI at scale. Agentic transformation. The “frontier suite” for organisations ready to operationalise AI across the enterprise.

But beneath the marketing headlines sits a more important question: Are organisations actually ready for it?

That’s the conversation many businesses are now having, particularly those who’ve already experimented with Copilot, built a few AI pilots, and are now trying to move from isolated success stories to something operational, governed, and scalable.

Because the reality is this: E7 is not simply a licence upgrade. Done properly, it represents a completely different operating model for AI.

And that’s exactly where Core helps organisations unlock value, while avoiding the hidden costs and governance pitfalls that can quickly spiral out of control.

E7 isn’t about experimentation anymore

Over the past 18 months, most organisations have gone through a similar AI journey.

A few pilot projects. Some early enthusiasm. A handful of departmental use cases. Maybe even some promising productivity gains.

But many businesses have now hit the same wall:

  • ROI is difficult to measure
  • Adoption has stalled
  • Governance is inconsistent
  • AI usage is happening in silos
  • Security concerns are increasing
  • Nobody really knows who owns what

Microsoft’s own positioning around E7 reflects this shift.

The message is no longer:
“Try AI.”

It’s now:
“Operationalise AI securely at scale.”

That’s a major difference.

E7 is designed for organisations that are moving beyond pilots and into enterprise-wide AI execution, where identity, governance, lifecycle management, security, and operational control become absolutely critical.

And that’s where many businesses discover the tooling alone is not enough.

The biggest mistake? Treating E7 like just another licence

One of the most common misconceptions around E7 is assuming it works like a traditional Microsoft upgrade path.

Buy the licence. Turn it on. Instant value. In reality, organisations that approach E7 this way often struggle the most.

Why? Because E7 doesn’t magically solve weak governance, poor identity management, fragmented security policies, or uncontrolled AI adoption.

In fact, it tends to expose them.

  • AI agents amplify whatever environment they’re deployed into.
  • If your existing identity estate is messy, AI will scale that mess faster.
  • If users already have excessive permissions, agents inherit those risks.
  • If governance policies are unclear, agent sprawl becomes inevitable.

The comparison many IT leaders are now making is shadow IT.

Years ago, organisations lost visibility as departments built their own spreadsheet ecosystems in Excel. Critical processes emerged outside central governance.

Now imagine that same problem — but with autonomous AI agents. That’s the risk organisations are facing today.

Agent sprawl is becoming a serious problem

One of the emerging concerns in enterprise AI is uncontrolled agent creation.

Many organisations are currently allowing users to create AI agents with minimal oversight. On the surface, that sounds innovative and empowering.

But without governance, it quickly creates problems:

  • Duplicate agents
  • Inconsistent workflows
  • Poor lifecycle management
  • Security exposure
  • Unknown data access
  • Compliance gaps
  • No operational ownership

This is exactly why Microsoft is positioning E7 as an AI operating model rather than simply a productivity suite.

The organisations seeing the most success are the ones treating AI like a managed operational capability, not a collection of disconnected experiments.

Why identity and governance matter more than ever

One of the clearest themes emerging around E7 is the growing importance of foundational identity management.

Before organisations scale AI, they need to answer some uncomfortable questions:

  • Are joiners, movers, and leavers properly managed?
  • Is role-based access control mature?
  • Are permissions overexposed?
  • Is conditional access configured correctly?
  • Are governance policies actually enforced?

Because if those foundations aren’t solid for humans, they certainly won’t hold up once AI agents begin operating across systems and data.

This is where many businesses underestimate the real challenge of AI transformation.

The hard part isn’t generating AI output. The hard part is governing it properly.

The hidden costs of E7 most businesses don’t see coming

Another misconception is that E7 represents a fixed-cost AI platform. In reality, the licence is only part of the equation. The bigger costs often emerge elsewhere:

Identity and security remediation

AI exposes weaknesses quickly.

Many organisations discover they need significant remediation work across Entra, Defender, Purview, and conditional access before they can safely scale AI.

Governance and operational management

AI requires ongoing oversight.

That means:

  • Agent lifecycle management
  • Governance frameworks
  • Monitoring
  • Policy enforcement
  • Security reviews
  • Operational support

Adoption and workflow redesign

Technology alone doesn’t deliver transformation.

Without user adoption and workflow redesign, organisations often end up with expensive tooling and limited business impact.

Compute and consumption costs

This is one of the least understood areas.

While E7 includes Copilot licensing, certain agent scenarios may still incur:

  • Azure compute costs
  • Copilot credits
  • External integration costs
  • Agent execution charges

Particularly when agents interact with external systems or operate at scale. That’s why organisations need clear operational governance from day one.

Where Core delivers real value

This is where Core’s approach becomes especially important.

Rather than treating E7 as a standalone deployment project, Core helps organisations build the operational foundations required to scale AI safely and effectively.

Identity and lifecycle management through Aurora

Core’s Aurora platform already helps organisations manage:

  • Identity lifecycle management
  • Role-based access control
  • Privileged access
  • Governance automation
  • Zero Trust alignment

Those same principles now extend naturally into agentic AI environments.

As AI agents increasingly behave like digital workers, organisations need the same governance controls they already apply to human identities.

That becomes a major differentiator.

Governance by design

Core also brings established governance frameworks into AI adoption.

That includes:

  • AI workflow discovery
  • Agent discovery
  • Governance modelling
  • Lifecycle management
  • Operational readiness

One area gaining particular traction is Agent Development Lifecycle (ADLC) governance — helping organisations manage agents from initial discovery through deployment, optimisation, and retirement.

In other words: AI governance becomes operationalised from the start rather than bolted on later.

Moving beyond AI pilots

Perhaps the biggest value Core brings is helping organisations move beyond isolated AI experiments.

Because many businesses are now stuck in the same place:

  • A few successful pilots
  • Some disconnected use cases
  • No enterprise operating model
  • Unclear ownership
  • Limited ROI visibility

Core helps bridge that gap. From strategy and governance through to operational rollout, adoption, and managed services, the focus is on turning AI into measurable business outcomes — not just technical capability.

AI transformation needs an operating partner

The organisations getting the most value from E7 aren’t simply buying licences.

They’re building an AI operating model.

That requires:

  • Governance
  • Identity management
  • Security alignment
  • Workflow redesign
  • Operational oversight
  • Lifecycle management
  • Adoption support

And that’s ultimately where Core positions itself. Not simply as a deployment partner. But as an AI operating partner — helping organisations operationalise AI securely, govern it effectively, and scale it with confidence.

Because with E7, success isn’t about turning AI on. It’s about making AI work properly.
